Campus: Blaine, MN
Eleven years after graduating college, Corrie couldn’t ignore the question, “What’s next?” any longer. And that meant achieving her dream to own a business.
Finding her vision: Corrie graduated college with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing Management. She quickly found work at an engineering firm in St. Paul, MN. Each day she felt the pull to imagine other outlets for her creativity. She began wondering what it would be like to work in the beauty industry.
“I’ve always had the idea that someday I will work for myself,” Corrie said. “I just didn’t know what.”
Achieving her dream: Eleven years later, Corrie made the leap and enrolled as a part-time student at Regency Beauty Institute-Blaine. After she graduated, she explored her passion for makeup further and worked in freelance makeup on the side. Several years later, she wrote her business plan, and soon after, opened the doors of her makeup boutique – Midwest Makeup Supply in Minneapolis.
Belonging in beauty: Besides selling performance-quality makeup, Corrie offers makeup applications, one-on-one lessons, classes and consultations through Midwest Makeup Supply.
“When I got into hair and makeup, I felt like it was the industry where I fit,” Corrie said. “That was where I belonged.”
She began freelancing and built a portfolio of fantasy and avant garde projects including makeup for several local fashion shows.
“I get so excited about those creative, out-of-the box clients.”
Business essentials: When Corrie launched Midwest Makeup Supply, she stocked her boutique with moisturizer, concealer, foundation, eye shadow, eye liner, lip liner, lipstick, brushes and eye lashes. Now she carries popular performance brands including Kryolan Professional Makeup® and Face Atlier®.
Corrie’s advice for starting a business: Don’t be afraid to take chances and risks. Do your research and start doing it –make “I’ll do it someday,” today.
