Regency students used their cosmetology skills to create looks for a local theater production of Hairspray

Students and staff at Regency Beauty Institute’s Mesquite, Texas campus showcased their cosmetology skills and helped out a local high school by creating styles for a production of Hairspray. Thomas W., the performance floor manager at the Mesquite beauty school, used his background in theater art to connect the students at Regency with Hillcrest High School’s theater department. The students created 1960s-style hair and makeup looks for the musical and gave the students who volunteered a chance to showcase their beauty skills outside of the salon. “It was an opportunity of a lifetime for the students to be able to work at this level so early in their careers,” Thomas said. “They jumped at the opportunity.” The students and Regency managers worked on everything from makeup and hairstyles to choosing the perfect wig for each character. They created styles based on the wigs that were featured. The wigs on many of the cast members were changed throughout the production to reflect different personalities and attitudes. This gave students the chance to work quickly and efficiently under real world deadlines. The theater department was extremely appreciative that the students were willing to share their skills, Thomas added. Sharing talents and skills learned at Regency with the community is a great way to build personal brand awareness and practice cosmetology beyond a salon setting. “The ability to be a part of a production is fantastic for resume and business building,” Thomas said. “It really makes you more marketable for the film and entertainment industry and gives you a taste of what it’s like backstage working under pressure.”
