This year was the second that students from the Little Rock campus took their talent to the runway in styling for Little Rock Fashion Week. The fashion event was founded in 2009 and has since become a staple in the local fashion scene.
Fifty students total from the full and part-time programs styled hair and makeup for over 80 models during the week. Often the designers gave the students pictures or descriptions to help them as they created the hair and makeup looks.
Popular makeup requests this year were winged eyes and bold lips. Hair requests ranged from sleek buns and pony tails to looser braids channeling a more natural look.
Students Genifer O. and Robert N. were part of the student styling team. Five of the events during the week gave them opportunities to put their styling skills through the paces in a variety of fast-paced scenarios including the Music Remix Experience; Fashion, Beauty, Modeling & Photoshoot Workshop; Media, Industry & VIP Mixer; BARE and the “BIG Night” for the runway show with over 400 in attendance.
“I want to be a platform stylist, so this is perfect training,” Genifer said.
As a student stylist, she was most looking forward to seeing the models styled with their complete hair and makeup looks. Her biggest challenge: individualizing the styles to fit each of the models.
Ultimately, she learned timing and efficiency techniques to carry forward into her career.
“Timing and a clean eye is everything,” Genifer said, “Keep it neat, and get it done right the first time. It saves time from fixing smaller issues.”
Robert was also looking forward to gaining experience from the styling opportunities. His advice to other students who aspire to style for the runway and other high profile fashion events?
“Have patience and speed. Don’t wear your feelings on your cape.”
