Braids are a style staple. Trends from the runway can help get your look ready for spring.

Regardless of your hair color, length or texture, the intricate weaving of a braid can instantly take you from bland to bombshell. The braid is a staple hair style, but different trends in texture and styles are always emerging. Here are some of the best braid trends from Spring/Summer 2014 that are sure to put a little spring in your step.

Doodads for your ‘do

Adding fabric or flowers to a braid can liven up your hairstyle without a long-term commitment. Rather than adding permanent colored streaks, just choose a colored fabric that complements your outfit.

Include it in your plait like Tai Chabani did in her Spring/Summer 2014 runway show. Loop the ribbon or fabric on your hair elastic at the base of your ponytail before you begin braiding. Using this technique with a crown braid can be particularly flattering. For a toned-down version of the ribbon weave, check out Calla’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection. If you have curly hair, securing small flowers throughout a voluminous fishtail can add even more dimension to your hair and give a nod to spring blooms.

Deconstruct

Autumn was all about undone buns, but this spring the focus is on the deconstructed braid. One of the most talked about hairstyles in the Spring/Summer 2014 shows was Rachel Zoe’s deconstructed safari braid. This mainly consists of multiple smaller braids intertwined into one, but to get a full rundown on how to recreate this showstopper, check out these steps straight from The Zoe Report.

Peek-a-braid

Adding a peek of a braid on the bottom layer of your hair can be stunning when it is mimicked in the texture of your hair. Keep the rest of your hair gritty and undone to get the full effect. The Spring/Summer 2014 show from Y-3 featured a thick braid peeking out from underneath the models’ tousled tresses.

  1. Spritz dry shampoo throughout second or third day hair to add volume and grit.
  2. Keep the style unkempt and add a braid starting at the nape of your neck on the bottom layer of your hair.
  3. Work your way towards the front of your hair sticking with only bottom layer hair.
  4. Get rid of the bulky hair elastics. Keep it discrete and secure with a clear elastic.
